Vision: We lead the nation fighting climate change and ensuring environmental sustainability.
Every Minnesotan deserves clean air, clean water, clean energy, and clean transportation choices.
Our State cannot afford anything less than the climate leadership we’ve known from our district. I’m ready to continue that work, and expand on it to build our State’s resiliency in the face of a changing climate. My leadership is rooted in climate advocacy, having worked and volunteered for over a decade within our community to take measures that protect our environment, make the sustainable choice an easy, accessible choice, and tackle the leading contributors of greenhouse gasses: transportation and housing.
We must:
- Protect our water and soil. I studied soil and water engineering, and know that our water is our most precious resource.our state must do whatever possible to ensure every community and household has access to clean, drinkable water. That means reducing runoff from agriculture fields and reducing monocultures in our farms, to preventing manufacturers from contaminating our water sources and holding polluters accountable. From implementation of lead pipe removal to addressing agriculture as one of the biggest contributors to poor water quality and erosion our state must be a leader in protecting our water and soil.
- Decarbonize buildings in Minneapolis and across the State – equitably. I drafted the adopted laws on advanced energy codes and energy benchmarking in 2023. I’ve also worked on adopting sustainable building ordinances in seven cities from Northfield to Eden Prairie to Saint Paul, and facilitated the stakeholder process for the roadmap to decarbonize all 1-4 unit homes in Minneapolis. This work includes making necessary improvements to energy efficiency and electrification, streamlining low income programs which are currently delivered by a myriad of players, and leveraging energy disclosure information to pinpoint buildings with the greatest opportunity for savings..
- Center equity and justice in this work. Our city and State have a history of transportation and housing policies that have disproportionately harmed Black communities and cultural centers. We've also seen the infringement of Tribal rights in government management of natural resources. The work we do for a sustainable future has to consider the needs of communities most impacted by our State policies, so no one is left behind.
- Develop creative win-win solutions. To build a sustainable future, it’s time to think differently and pursue proven solutions to our challenges. Let’s support farmers in diversifying their crops and income by pairing solar energy and agriculture through agrivoltaics. Let’s make it easier for builders to pilot and engage the community through alternative sustainable methods, like what my family did with the Uptown Strawhouse community build.
- Transition to zero waste. We must move our State towards waste reduction, recycling, and composting, and away from burning or landfilling waste. This will require State-level regulations to hold producers accountable while providing resources for local communities.
- Invest in our transit system. We can make our transit system better by improving our governing structure that appropriately allows the Met Council to lead on metro transportation planning, establish accountability, and empower the right partners to lead on infrastructure implementation, like the Department of Transportation metro district.
- Invest in green jobs. As part of the Minneapolis decarbonization roadmap, we showed that Minneapolis alone will need 1,000 workers - from electricians to HVAC technicians to insulation installers - to retrofit homes and meet the climate challenge. As part of our climate change mitigation efforts, we must incentivize and support these family-supporting green jobs in our State to weatherize and electrify all of our homes so we can move towards a zero emission future. And as we build this industry, we must continue our State’s strong tradition of protecting labor rights.
